On Saturday, the Marshall XC team traveled to Lakeland, Mattoon in the bright and early morning for their annual regional race.
The Lady Lions came out on top when it mattered most, capturing the regional championship with a low score of 49 points and delivering a dominant performance led by individual champion Madeleine Fox and runner-up Grace Thompson. The Lions placed five runners among the top 21 finishers to secure first place as a team and claim the regional title.
Fox led the way for Marshall, winning the individual championship with a time of 18:09.9. The senior's first-place finish set the tone for the Lions and gave the team a strong start in the race for the regional title.
Thompson followed closely behind, finishing second overall in 18:26.0. Thompson also recorded a personal-best time, making her runner-up finish an especially impressive performance. With Fox and Thompson claiming the top two spots, the Lady Lions established themselves as the team to beat throughout the race.
The girls’ success extended beyond their top two runners. Addie Nave finished eighth in 20:35.8, while Myah Boyd placed 17th in 21:10.2. Olivia Moseley completed Marshall's scoring lineup with a 21st-place finish in a personal-best time of 21:44.9.
Marshall finished with 49 points and a combined time of 1:40:06.8, averaging 20:01.4 per runner.
The regional championship highlighted the Lady Lion’s depth and ability to perform under postseason pressure. Fox and Thompson's first and second-place finishes gave the Lions a significant advantage, while the remaining scoring runners helped secure the team victory.
With the regional title in hand, Marshall can celebrate a championship earned through strong individual performances and a complete team effort. The Lions' victory marks an important accomplishment for the program and provides momentum heading into the next stage of the postseason.
The boys’ team also did well, as they earned a spot at next week’s sectional meet back at Lakeland with a fourth-place finish overall, marking the first time in four years the Lions have qualified as a team. Marshall scored 94 points and recorded a combined time of 1:30:23.1, securing its place among the top seven teams advancing to sectionals.
Senior Steven Hendrixson led Marshall's efforts, finishing 10th overall with a time of 17:02.5. Teammate Thomas Weber (also a senior) followed in 16th place at 17:31.1, giving the Lions two runners in the top 16.
The rest of Marshall's scoring lineup helped secure the sectional berth. Bricyn Cassagne finished 27th in 18:08.9, followed by Henry Arthur in 33rd at 18:49.9 and Jacob Weber in 34th at 18:50.7. Charlie Fox placed 36th in 18:59.1, while Cooper Crumrin finished 65th in 21:30.4.
Marshall's five scoring runners combined for an average time of 18:04.7. The team's ability to place its top five runners consistently throughout the field proved important in the team standings.
Qualifying for sectionals for the first time in four years represents a significant achievement for the Lions. Team scoring rewards depth, with races being won with all five runners, rather than simply one or two. The Lion’s fourth-place finish demonstrated the collective effort needed to advance beyond the regional level.
With their sectional qualification secured, the Lions will look to carry their momentum into the next stage of the postseason and continue building on an already successful season.
