This past Saturday, the Marshall Lions traveled to Paris, Illinois, to participate in the 10th Annual Doc Acklin Invite, a mostly flat course with difficult terrain and a few hills. This was the first meet of the season for the Lions and a first taste of competition this season, facing schools like Paris, Cumberland, St. Joe, and Charleston.
On the girls’ side, powerhouse duo Madeleine Fox and Grace Thompson finished the race in 1st and 2nd on the day, with Madeleine Fox finishing with a time of 19:30.86 and Grace Thompson finishing with a 20:02 time.
This was the third year in a row where a pair of Marshall runners have finished first and second at the meet. Molly Farrell, who was a multiple time top finisher at the IHSA 1A state meet and school record holder in the 3 mile and 5k recently graduated this summer, leaving behind big shoes to fill for this talented Lions girls’ team.
Addie Nave and Myah Boyd both also had strong races, with Nave finishing 11th with a time of 22:08.36, and Boyd finishing with a 22:12.15 time to finish 12th. Olivia Moseley finished with a 24:55.34 time, placing 38th. The Lady Lions finished 2nd overall with a low score of 55.
Last year, the Lady Lions ended up qualifying for the state meet and with how they are looking after their first meet, they certainly have a shot of doing so this year as well.
The boys side also had several strong performances, with Steven Hendrixson leading Marshall with a strong 17:47 3-mile time, placing 15th. The rest of the boys’ team also ran solid times. This included Senior Thomas Weber, who finished 50th with a 19:26 time, and other Lions including Bricyn Cassagne, who finished with a 20:15.94 time to place 62nd; Jacob Weber, who finished with a 20:49.95 to finish 71st; Henry Arthur, who finished 80th with a 21:02 time; Charlie Fox finished 92nd with a 21:41.8 time and Cooper Crumrin, who finished 117th with a 24:25.37 time. The boys placed 8th overall, finishing with 228 points.
The team will travel to Chrisman, Illinois and participate in the Cow Chip Classic September 5.
