Wrestling in action at Terre Haute South

The Marshall Lions Wrestling team saw its first action of their first season in decades at the Terre Haute South JV Palooza Dual Meet Tournament on Tuesday, November, 25th. They wrestled three teams during the tournament: West Vigo, South Vermillion, and Northview. They finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.


In the first dual meet they faced West Vigo. The meet started out with a double forfeit at the 106 lb. weight class. At the 113 lb. weight class, Wyatt Hopkins won by forfeit (6 team points). The first action of the day was Marshall’s Jude Hoehn against John-Henry Anderson. Hoehn was in control early in the match getting a takedown and putting his opponent on his back for four near fall points. Hoehn then finished the match with a pin at 1:50 in the first period. West Vigo won by forfeit at 132 lb. This put the Big Red up 12-6 going into the 138 lb weight class. At 138 lbs., Marshall’s Gavin Santagata faced West Vigo’s Jaxson Lozier. Santagata got the first takedown, but his opponent was able to escape and answered with a takedown of his own. This put him up by one going into the second period. Lozier selected the down position in the second period. He reversed Santagata and was able to get him to his back where he pinned him at 2:27. After double forfeits at 144 and 150 lbs., Marshall’s Gage Kent wrestled Evan Newport at 157 lbs. Kent was in control of the match early with a takedown and quickly pinned his opponent in 1:01. This tied up the team score 18-18. Action at 165 lbs had Marshall’s Tevin Cribelar face Dawson Mundy. The match had an exciting first period with takedowns, escapes, and reversals by both wrestlers and ended with Mundy having the advantage 7-6. Mundy started the second period in the down position. Cribelar was able to quickly turn him to his back and pinned Mundy at 2:25. The next match pitted Marshall’s Rocco Giannavola vs. Emmet Key. Giannavola scored a takedown and 4 near fall points in the first period to take a 7-0 lead to the second period. Giannavola started the second period in the down position. He escaped and gathered another takedown and worked Key to his back where he pinned him at 2:57. Marshall’s wrestler at 190 lbs was Fisher Bishop. He faced West Vigo’s Logun Chambers. The first period has a lot of action with Bishop scoring the initial takedown and then the wrestlers exchanging reverses after Chambers was able to secure four near fall points. Chambers started the second period down and was able to escape Fisher. Fisher answered with a takedown and turned Chambers to his back and ultimately secured the pin at 3:17. This put the Big Red up 36-18 going into the 215 lb weight class. West Vigo and Marshall traded forfeits in 215 and 285, where Braden Anderson won at 215 lbs and Caleb Barnett won at 285 lbs. This completed the meet and Marshall won 42-24!

The second match of the day for the Lions was against South Vermillion. The start of the match at 120lbs was slowed by a number of forfeits. Marshall’s Jude Hoehn won by forfeit at 120 lbs.; 126 lbs. was a double forfeit, and South Vermillion’s Justus Grahlmann won by forfeit at 132 lbs. So the first match that was contested started at the 138 lb weight class where Marshall’s Gavin Santagata faced Oscar Rivera. A minute into the match Rivera took Santagata down and immediately to his back where Rivera secured the pin at 1:20. The next two weight classes, 144 and 150 lbs., were forfeits that South Vermillion won. At 157 lbs. Marshall’s Gage Kent faced off against Braiden Freed. Kent had a great first period where he scored a takedown and four near fall points, putting him up 7-0 going into the second period. Freed chose down in the second period and was able to reverse Kent and catch him on his back where he pinned him at 2:29. The next match at 165 lbs. had Marshall’s Tevin Cribelar facing Dante Sanquenetti. Cribelar took Sanquenetti down to start the match. Sanquenetti escaped and Cribelar worked a second takedown. Sanquenetti then got a reverse and Cribelar responded with a reverse of his own at the end of the first period, where he led 8-3. Sanquenetti chose down in the second period. Cribelar worked hard on top, but ultimately got reversed to his back where he was pinned at 3:24. At 175 lbs, Marshall’s Max Welsh faced off against Colton Robertson. Robertson secured a takedown and three near fall in the first period to take a 6-0 lead to the second period. Welsh chose down in the second period and after fighting hard to get an escape or reversal was pinned at 2:58. At the 190 lb weight class Marshall’s Carson Claypool faced Tristan Hale. Hale worked quickly to get a takedown and caught Claypool on his back to get a fall at 0:23. The 215 lb weight class was a double forfeit. At 285 lbs, Marshall’s Lachlan Smith competed against Desean Alstan. Alstan controlled the first period with a takedown and penalty point, but Smith was able to escape before the end of the period and the score at the end of the first period was 4-1 in favor of Alstan. The second period was a different story as Smith, who chose bottom, escaped and eventually secured a takedown that took Alstan to his back where Smith secured the pin at 2:27. The next matches at the start of the weight classes were forfeits for each team – at 106 lbs. South Vermillion’s Brayden Baldwin secured the forfeit and at 113 lbs. Marshall’s Wyatt Hopkins won by forfeit. This ended the meet with South Vermillion winning 54-18. Although the score did not indicate a close match, there were opportunities for the Big Red to win several matches and make it a closer contest.

The third and final meet of the day for the Lions was against Northview. The meet started at the 126 lb weight class and had consecutive forfeits before a match was eventually wrestled at 190 lbs.! The team score going into the 190 lb contest was 18-18 due to the forfeits. At 190 lbs., Thomas Stafford faced Jude Conclin. Stafford quickly got a takedown and was able to get Conclin turned to his back where he secured the pin at 1:04. At 215, South Vermillion won by forfeit, evening the team score 24-24. In the 285 lb match, Josef Stafford faced Lucas Miller. Miller was able to get a takedown in the first period and then take Stafford to his back for a pin at 1:29. The meet continued at the low end of the weight classes where Northview won by forfeit at 106. The 113 lb. weight class was a double forfeit. The meet concluded with a forfeit win by Jude Hoehn at 120 lbs. The Lions lost the meet 36-30 in a contest that only had two matches wrestled.

The Lions start their LIC dual meet schedule next week when they match up against at the Olney Tigers at Richland County High School this Tuesday (12/2) night at 6pm.
