Jill Strohm receives VFW award

Fifth grade teacher, Ms. Jill Strohm, was recently selected as the District 17 VFW Citizenship Educator of the Year, after being nominated by her peers. At a ceremony on January 15, she was surprised with the honor of the State of Illinois K-5 Citizenship Educator of the Year.   There will be a ceremony for this in June in Springfield, where she will be considered in the national awards contest.

Ms. Strohm writes, "I am passionate about patriotism and veterans.  The things we do in fifth grade are part of a team effort, and my team deserves the accolades as well."

"My passion goes back to (retired teacher) Shannon Snedeker who wrote letters to veterans before I was even at North School.   Through the years, so many people have helped it all grow."

"Twenty + years ago, we started a very bare bones program at the Legion.  Through the years a bigger and better program at the Junior High was born.  My teammates, Mrs. Wilson and her musical talent and patience, and administration all helped make this program memorable."

"The nomination  for this award by my colleagues is very humbling.  I almost feel non deserving, because you all do great things.  But, it is an honor, and I am going to accept it as such."

Congratulations Ms. Strohm!
