Heather Setzer
For Coach Setzer, coaching is about more than just winning games. As the junior high softball coach, she enjoys teaching the game and watching her players grow and improve throughout the season.
Setzer has been coaching for several years. After coaching for a few years earlier in her life, she took time away to raise her family. She has now returned to coaching and is in her sixth year of her second coaching journey.
Setzer attended Niantic-Harristown High School, where she was involved in several activities and athletics. Her accomplishments included being a member of the National Honor Society, earning all-conference honors in volleyball and basketball, participating in boys baseball, and competing in the state meet for track.
After high school, Setzer continued her education at the University of Evansville and EIU.
Her love for the game and enjoyment of teaching are what motivated her to become a coach. One of her favorite parts of coaching is watching the girls improve and preparing them for high school. She gets to see players develop their skills and confidence while helping prepare them for the next level.
Setzer also has some straightforward advice for young softball players in the area. She encourages players to be confident at the plate and take their opportunities.
"Swing the bat — you don't get hits if you don't take a shot at it," Setzer said. She also reminds players that while walks are valuable, players can learn more by taking chances and being aggressive.
Her advice applies to defense as well. Setzer encourages her players not to be afraid of making an error when attempting a difficult play. Sometimes taking that chance can make the difference between an ordinary play and a game-changing one.
Through her experience as an athlete and coach, Heather Setzer continues to help young softball players improve their skills while preparing them for the future. Her passion for the game and commitment to teaching make her an important part of junior high softball.
