As we near the end of Week 2 of Remote Learning Days and Week 5 of the School Closure, I wanted to try to provide some answers to some frequently asked questions.
Do you know anything about what is going to happen in May?
Governor Pritzker gets to make that decision. As soon as I know something, I will share with all of you as soon as possible.
What about events scheduled for May?
All plans for events in May are on hold right now until we have a clearer direction as to what May looks like for Schools and the greater Community of Marshall. Our hearts go out to all students, families, and the Community with regards to experiences missed during this unprecedented time, but our thoughts are especially with the Class of 2020 and their families. We know that many of these May events like Prom and Graduation have been looked forward to for many years. It is clear to us that Prom will be at the very least postponed from the original date of May 2. With Graduation scheduled late in May, we have not postponed it yet. Please know that whatever hand we are dealt, we will do our best to do what we can to make these opportunities happen for you at some time in some form if at all possible.
Can we still get technology if we need it?
Even if you filled out the Technology Survey before, and said that you didn’t need a school device loan, you can fill it out again if you have found it would be easier to have one. Here is the link to the survey. Our tech team is checking this daily, and can get devices ready.
Can we still get meals or get signed up for meal delivery?
Meals are still available for any child 18 and under every weekday. They can be picked up at the High School between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. daily. Busses are delivering on their routes to anyone who needs it. We are also running a town route. If you are need meals delivered call your schools office to arrange.
Does the work during Remote Learning Count?
The goal during Remote Learning Days is to provide to as many students as possible an opportunity to maintain skills already learned and continue learning when possible while teachers and students are away from school. Opportunities will take on different forms including both online and print form knowing that not all have the same internet and technology access. Knowing that everyone’s situation is different, we encourage all to participate to the best of their abilities given their situation, but know that none of the opportunities provided are required and cannot hurt a student’s academic standing.
At the PreK-8th level there are no traditional grades being taken. We are tracking student engagement and progress. For those that can’t engage in Remote Learning, we will do our best to provide opportunities to build up missed skill work when we are able to get back to traditional school.
At the High School level, grading is similar to PreK-8th, with a few large exceptions listed below.
3rd Quarter Grade Booster – High School Students have an opportunity to boost their 3rd Quarter Grade by 1 letter grade. Students may arrange with the teacher and principal to do an assignment or assignments based on 3rd quarter material. The size of the assignment or assignments would depend on how close the student is to the next letter grade. This work would be graded with traditional letter grades and points. We strongly encourage students that failed a 3rd quarter class to take advantage of this opportunity.
Dual Credit Grading – Students who choose to continue towards dual credit will have their work graded traditionally, but those grades could only help your grade. A grade cannot go down. Students who choose not to pursue the dual credit would have their work graded Pass (P) or Incomplete (I). Teachers will be in contact and will need to know if the student is continuing towards the dual credit option.
Driver Education – The Secretary of State has allowed time spent in Remote Learning in Driver Education to count towards the 30 hour classroom time requirement. Students will be able to log up to 30 minutes per day towards the total needed. A summer or additional opportunity will be created if necessary to complete the 30 hour classroom requirement.
